While Faro airport is usually just used as a stopover when people go to other resorts nearby, it is actually a very attractive city overall. However, even if you just plan on using Faro airport as a stopover, you should definitely think about spending at least a day there to see the city's beauty for yourself. While you are there, here are the best things to see in Faro that won't take too long.

Old Town

Without a doubt, Old Town should be the very first place that you visit after you get out of Faro airport. Known to the locals as Cidade Velha, Old Town is a very atmospheric place. There are cobbled streets, tiny cafes and historic buildings all around, as well as numerous markets wherein artisans sell different handcrafts. There are various interesting attractions for you to check out in Old Town, too, such as the Bishop's Palace and the Town Hall.

Capela d'Ossos

Capela d'Ossos, or Chapel of Bones, is a very fascinating attraction despite being macabre. It is located in the Igreja de Nossa Sehora and was built during the 19th century with nothing but human bones that still line the walls. Another feature of this church would be its stunning Baroque altar.

The Cathedral

The impressive cathedral found in Faro was once a mosque and is definitely worth visiting when waiting for your next flight from Faro airport. The main attraction at the cathedral would definitely be its decorative tiles, which were placed there several centuries ago.

Loule

The small village of Loule is right ousted Faro, so you shouldn't have any trouble arranging a quick little trip there before traveling out from Faro airport. This quaint little village is well-known for having plaster chimneys and is generally a nice place to walk around. Make sure you visit the museum at the Moorish castle to learn more about Moorish history, and go to the Igreja Matriz church that has been around for more than a millennium, as well.

Museu Maritimo

Museu Maritimo, or Maritime Museum, can teach you all about Portugal's history. You might not know this, but Portugal has always been a big seafaring country. The most interesting part about its history, though, would be the fact that Portuguese explorers actually planned to roam around the world and look for new lands to conquer. You will also be able to check out replicas of their boats at the museum along with some of the actual crafts that they put to use in the process.

Generally speaking, Faro is a very lovely city and you should definitely visit it if you ever find yourself at Faro airport because of a stopover. It is actually more than just a simple place that you can pass through while going your ultimate destination. So, if you ever end up on a transfer to or from Faro airport, try to spend the day seeing a bit more of it. You definitely won't regret it! Just take note of the attractions mentioned above.
