Family Holiday Destinations: Hawaii, United States

Posted 25 May 2014 by

Hawaii has been known for decades as the ultimate (American) beach destination. The Aloha State is located in the Polynesian region, and is the only American state that consists entirely of islands. A popular tourist destination, Hawaii is home to breathtakingly beautiful beaches, pleasant weather all year round, and natural wonders.

It is also one of the best destinations for family holidays, and here are some of the best places to see and experience on your visit.

Fun at the beach

Waikiki Beach

As mentioned earlier, the entire state of Hawaii is divided into several Polynesian islands—which means that there are plenty of amazing coastlines and breathtakingly beautiful beaches. Oahu, the most populous island of the state, is home the state capital Honolulu and many tourist attractions. Waikiki Beach (shown right) is the most popular beach in the island, which was once exclusive to Hawaiian royalty. Make sure to visit the Duke Kahanamoku Beach with your family, as it offers excellent amenities and water activities, and is also easily accessible. Kauai, another major island in the state, is perfect for kayaking, especially around the Blue Lagoon.

Aside from lying in the sand and enjoying the turquoise waters, youngsters will also enjoy snorkeling to see the colorful fish and corals, watch birds and turtles that live around the beach, and marvel at the breathtaking scenery surrounding the beaches of Hawaii.

Get a dose of culture

Camp Penguin

Hawaii combines its local, American, and Asian influences into a culture that is truly their own. Take your kids to the Camp Penguin (recommended for children ages four to 12) where exciting educational activities will help them learn the vibrant culture and interesting history of Hawaii. The Polynesian Cultural Centre in Oahu is also a great place to learn the local culture through food. Hula workshops, lei making, and other such short lessons are widely available from resorts and cultural institutions.

Exciting outdoor activities

Hawaii is all about the great outdoors, and you would never run out of things to do under the Hawaiian sun. Head over to Kauai’s Princeville Ranch Adventures if your children like animals, as they can interact with farm animals, hike to see friendly animals out in their natural habitat, or take pony rides. Ziplining amenities are also found in various parts of Maui and Kauai—this activity is perfect for older kids who want to see the wonderful scenery around the islands from a different perspective.

Farm visits are also a great way to learn the culture of Hawaii. Pineapple plantations and coffee farms abound in the islands, and you can always ask your hotel which ones offer guided tours for children and families.

The Volcanoes National Park in Big Island is one of the best science lessons to experience—kids can see the effects of volcanic lava to the landscape and seascape of Hawaii. Mauna Kea is the best destination for a bit of astronomy; they can gaze at the stars on a clear night (and it often is, not much pollution or artificial lights in this part of the world).
