Corfu (also known as Kerkyra or Kerkira) is a city of slightly more than 100,000 people. It is located in the Ionian Islands region of Greece, and is located very close to the border of Albania.

This being Greece, it is ancient. The earliest recorded reports of the city are from a tablet (the stone kind, not the modern-day computer-equivalent) from 2,300 years ago. Some scholars believe that it was referenced in Homer’s Odyssey. Its entire history has been somewhat quiet and peaceful, although after the decline and fall of the Greek and Roman empires, it fell under the rule of the Venetians for a few centuries.

This being located on an island--and a relatively small island, at that--the only way to get to Corfu is through the seaport or the airport. Once in it, it is best to hire a car.
